My roommate, L, makes videos with her sister on youtube in a vlogbrothers brotherhood2.0 style.
Hawaii by The Strokes is really not allowing me to express my frustration right now. Switched to Babyshambles Down in Albion.
I really like her sister's videos because she usually gives a life update or just shows footage of places she's visiting in France, but L is so annoying because she always tries to be deep and give meaning to her mundane activities, which alright, fine whatever, but she puts on this really annoying teacher voice that sounds really fake, but then she also sounds really unsure of herself, and it's just exasperating to watch. I'd just not, but then she'd get hurt if she brought it up and I said I hadn't watched it and would then make me watch it in front of her, and then I'd have to hide my expressions so she wouldn't see how painful I find it.
She's also started dating a 17-year-old. Her best friends are 18 and 19 respectively, and she keeps making friends with their friends, so she just ends up hanging out with teenagers when she isn't with N and me. ( We're 21.) I mean, they're in Running Start, so at least they aren't high schoolers, but it's still awkward when I meet someone and assume they're 19/20 and then find out that they're 17/18. I know 4 years isn't that large an age gap, but L will have her Masters after this year.
I think the reason why my roommates rub me the wrong way so often is 'cause they talk about how mature they are compared to others our age. I might not be pursuing a Masters or finishing college in 4 years, but at least I don't have illusions of maturity. We're not better than others just because we don't get fucked up every weekend and thirsty Thursday.
IDK. Maybe they want to align themselves with a clique (nerds) because they went to such large schools where there were enough people to have cliche cliques. My school had less than 200 students, so we were all forced to interact with each other. Maybe that led to us not stereotyping each other as much? Like, we still had groups, but there was a lot of crossover.
I personally don't identify as a nerd. Yeah, I like anime and manga and reading, but that doesn't make me some sort of outcast or better than others. Also, it's pretty weird to take pride in disliking sports. I'm not a huge fan of sports, but I don't think that they're pointless the way L and N do, never mind that sports can provide community bonding experiences and chances for exercise. Sure, some of sports culture is seriously messed up, but you could say the same for the music and arts world they love. (though I feel it would just go in one ear and out the other with lots of defenses about how art uses the brain and sports are stupid)
Oh! Speaking of manga, I started getting into it again and am so happy I did. For some reason, I just couldn't get it in me to read anything. I'll do a manga post soon of what I'm reading and planning to read. I hope this also means that I'll get back into anime soon, though lately all tv watching has been too passive for me. Like, even when I want to watch something I get restless and end up pausing to go on tumblr or ONTD.
